i'm trying to not get my hopes up on this one.. mostly because I expect that it'll just be the movie store, and that really doesn't excite me very much. I'm not the type to buy DVDs, or watch a movie more than once unless I have to.. so paying $15 for a DVD to watch on a small screen isn't as appealing as heading to my blockbuster and paying $4 to watch it once on my TV and then move on.

But boy.. if a new iPod comes out.. I'm gunna have to go work the streets tomorrow night so I can afford one.. er. ;)

That is probably either down to your dad trying very hard to avoid tax, and/or the US tax system in its current state being too complex.

Both of those possibilities can be solved without getting rid of income tax.

I'd be equally optimistic about a reformed income tax system that was less complicated.

he spends so much time on taxes because he has 8 different businesses to take care of, most of which are involved in oil and natural gas, which have even more complicated taxes.

Please don't say "stop complaining, you're rich", because he wasn't born that way. He built those business from scratch, and i do not believed those actions should be punished with insane taxes

Well, I just bought it because I need to sync my computers. However, I do not believe Apple would do this for free  At $99/yr list price it is a lot but I wouldn't mind paying $25/year. Better yet, Apple should include it as a free service for those with Apple Care to leverage people into buying the extended service, For others, charge $25 - $50/year. Heck, we pay a premium for Apple products, they should throw us a bone every now and then.

Almost bought the kit, but when I went to the Apple store and actually saw it in person I couldn't justify paying $120+tax for a piece of plastic. Yeah, yeah yeah, it has bluetooth, charges the phone, and has a gps chip. Its ridiculous to have to pay $100 for an app and $120 for a piece of plastic.

That makes sense ... thanks for sharing!

If Magellan handles bluetooth a bit more logical, and Magellan supports all Apple devices (iPhone & iPod Touch) and Magellan can handle covers/skins ... it's worth the $10 more ... too bad they (or Apples approval process) missed the Xmas rush ... TomTom may see some exchanges in early Jan for Magellan.

    I agree! I'm on my second TomTom car kit and continue to have problems with the Bluetooth speaker phone cutting in and out so you cannot hear the other person's conversation. I raised the issue with TomTom support and their reply was;

"I have forwarded the information that you provided to our product development team for review. We often use customer feedback as initiative to add or change the features of our products. Thank you for your feedback relating to this issue. We hope to have this issue resolved with a future update to the TomTom application."

I have a Magellan Premium car kit on order and will take my second TomTom car kit back to Apple for a refund!

While I'm sure if it is true, it'd be a cool phone, but it just seems like one of those rumours that comes up occasionally and then goes away, just like the Tablet Mac.

Normally I would agree, but then Steve hit us with the Intel switch and shook up all my feelings about long-term rumors that come and go.

Android is still open... They are just going to be much more tighter on what Products qualify to get the google Logo and the android name.

I predict it's going to go much tighter than that. I keep seeing too many articles about security risks and issues with Android.... it's going to bite them hard and they will need to tighten the ship significantly or loose control.

Open source is a great concept, but in a commercial world, someone needs to step in a set the rules and walls or it just becomes it's own monster and a total mess.

Within the year, we'll see major changes in the Android camp.

Hummm.... if they wait until the fall, then people like me who got their iPhone on day 1 may be eligible for an early upgrade. Could be a stroke of genius by Apple again.

Use new OS things to carry us through the summer and give us new hardware goodies in the fall with volumes ramped up to handle demand as opposed to cutting it so close like they have in the past.

I don't think Apple is stupid... so I expect they have a plan that will make us all happy by the end of the year. Besides... iPhone 4 and iPad 2 are both very competitive products and a new iOS will keep them fresh for a while more while the hardware is sorted out.

I think this could be a good thing more than a bad.

Only if you choose to "sync" your data in the preferences as was stated before in this thread so in fact iDisk out of the box does "not" work like Drop Box. I think WebDAV may be a speed culprit as well but if anyone knows of a blazing fast WebDAV service chime in.

I would say thats bit trivial since if you don't need to watch for amount data transfer the logical choice is "Automatic". If you pay for according to transfer or if there are limitations on it (tethering with some service providers etc.) you would then be better off with the "Manual" option. In any case you are always working with local files which are sitting in you local HD. Even if you have chosen "Manual" and then sync the transfer happens in the background. Anyway, you're correct that WebDAV is what really sets these apart (and not in the good way from Apple's perspective). Also I'm betting my money on low number of data centers and lack of spread (due to global variations in transfer speeds).

What actually worries me is the quality of service if Apple decides to make MobilMe a free service. In its current form iDisk is far from being snappy™ but what happens when the masses start rolling in? One gigantic data center means very little in global perspective. You need wide spread of them all around the world if you want to offer free and reliable cloud services. Just looking at Google data centers in 2008 gives good idea what was required back then... I'm well aware that Google is a different kind of beast but it's a beast with good access and response.

Here's my problem with this distribution method for an OS:

I have 4 Macs in my house. Previously, I'd buy a Family License DVD and go from machine to machine installing it.

If I have to DL it from the App Store, I've got to download it 4 times! I don't care about paying for multiple licenses... I do care about blowing out my internet bandwidth downloading the same multi-gigabyte file 4 times.

There had better be a physical-media option!

If you 'can't have cameras' dont use them. It doesnt matter if they are built in. And for people with dual monitors they will have... er... oh yeh two cameras :D

Well...alright, if you want ;) . All i know is that places where sensitive information is important, they'll use another display.

The main point I'm not making very elegantly however is that I just don't feel that a cheap built in camera is a pro feature - and lets face it - a display starting at 550 is certainly aimed to the pro market.

I know a lot more pros who wouldn't care about the camera than those who would welcome it. Heck, lets save a bit off the price eh apple?

yes very true, I think i might stick with BLT as well, hard to beat 85 dollars...lol, especially since i just learned that the new Magellan Car Kit will cost 129.99  and here we all were complaining about tomtom's pricing...lol. I will say, just as i have stated before though, that it is still enticing to go to my local apple store and pick up a unit. I guess it all depends on if I go on some spur of the moment trip..lol

Yeah, I hear you. I hate waiting for orders to ship...I guess we get so use to items being in stock, and on their way the next day.

Thought I'd post the Magellan car kit info for all to see:

Magellan car kit detailed at FCC filing

That was fast. We just learned Magellan was going to offer a car kit for the iPhone and it has already hit the FCC. GPSTracklog.com has a detailed drawing of the new device, and it looks to be quite complete. Magellan has said the kit will be on sale before the end of the year, and even give the iPod touch full nav capabilities.

The car kit is supposed to allow any iPhone GPS app to work with it, so you're not limited to the Magellan app. It works in portrait or landscape mode, and has a speaker for hearing directions and also link to your iPhone for Bluetooth based calls.

The Magellan Roadmate app itself [iTunes link] has a boatload of good features, and we're anxious to get our hands on the app for a full test. Holiday travelers will have a lot of good choices for navigating to your destinations. Remember when we thought the plain old Google Maps app was cool?

Wild speculation: It's possible that, for the short term, Apple might have both Intel and ARM processors in some of its machines. Think GPU or co-processor. This would allow a "Mac" to run iOS apps at full speed without processor emulation (albeit some chipset/environmental emulation).

I use Mac in quotes because such a hybrid monstrosity may in fact be iOS first, Mac second. Somewhere between an iPad and a MacBook Air.

It seems obvious that Apple wants this sort of blending, so why not do it in hardware?

Considering that a dual core 1 Ghz processor (and much less) is running iOS apps at full speed I seriously doubt a current Intel 4 Core processor (or even a dual core) would break much of a sweat running these apps at full speed emulated or not.

Let me know how loud the volume is during a call conversation. If it is significantly louder than the TomTom, I may jump ship and get the Megellan unit.

So hear's my initial sense of the Magellan kit. I like it better than the TomTom kit for two simple reasons..first, it is rock solid when I drive around no matter how bumpy the road is. Instead of the tiny clicks on the TT, it has simple detents at 12-3-6-9 and it locks in solid. Second, is the fact that I can just put my iPhone in with the case on makes it far more convenient. I didn't think this would be such a big deal, but in fact I'm in and out of the car a lot so its a significant benefit. The speaker is loud and clear, but I don't think its louder than the TomTom...about the same.

I'll let you know more as I use it for awhile!

I just ran into this review today so I thought I'd add it in for anyone interested...
